St. Margaret’s School Begins Construction on Outdoor Classroom, New Dock
(Tappahannock, Va.) - Construction is underway for a new outdoor classroom and dock at St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock. The project will be completed this August so students can immediately begin using the new facilities in the fall of 2022. The project entails a new classroom platform, lab equipment, solar panels, several aquariums, and a wind turbine. The school’s existing boating and sailing programs will be augmented with a new floating dock, drop-down dock, and boat lift. The school is actively fundraising for the project's second phase, which includes expanding the existing swimming pool and winterizing with a bubble dome. All these improvements will allow St. Margaret’s School to offer swimming lessons to the public.

During the school’s Centennial year, St. Margaret’s expanded its college preparatory program that combines science, technology, engineering, art, and math to incorporate the Rappahannock River. The new program is aptly named S.T.R.E.A.M. The school is located on the banks of the Rappahannock. For over a century, St. Margaret’s girls have used the Rappahannock for academic and recreational pursuits.

“The next century at St. Margaret’s School finds our girls in a post-COVID world where technical and outdoor learning are paramount,” said Head of School Colley Bell. “The construction of a new outdoor classroom and dock will bring science labs, math workshops, and the humanities to our riverfront. Whether a boarding or day student, all of our girls receive a holistic education guided by the Episcopal Church's tenets.”
